Mayal Lyang, the Land of the Gods.
Sikkim’s indigenous Lepcha people inhabit the pristine and beautiful valley of Dzongu that is situated at an altitude of 3,000-20,000 feet above the sea level. A community that worships nature and treasures ancient wisdom, the Lepchas are the proud guardians of this sacred land.
Likewise, Dzongu is where mother nature has been most generous in providing the purest and the most potent harvest that touches the lives of each and every household in Dzongu. It is as if she cherishes the deep bond the Lepchas have with her and, like a mother, she takes care of them.
Respecting nature’s timeline and not rushing is what defines the ethos of the tribal Lepcha community of Sikkim. The women, who are the backbone of the community, traverse the land their ancestors have walked on. Rooted in ancestral knowledge and memory, the Lepcha way of life promotes preserving nature and their land, their Mayal Lyang.
This is also the land of the famed mandarin oranges that is celebrated during the Chalum Dambroo Orange Festival every year. The community comes together to pick the orange harvest that bathes Dzongu’s hills in a golden hue from November to February year after year. The bounty of mother nature peppers the hills of Dzongu like precious gems.
Agapi is proud to work in close collaboration with the tribal Lepcha women of Dzongu in bringing to you the best of the valley in the form of our single-ingredient orange-based products.
